If you’ve never had a massage before, it’s completely normal to feel anxious, unsure, or self-conscious. Some people walk in thinking, “I’m not super comfortable with massage, but I’m desperate - my back and neck are killing me.” Others are simply curious, wondering if massage might help them relax or take better care of themselves. Whatever brings you in, know this: a massage therapist’s treatment room is a safe, judgment-free space.
First, take a deep breath. You’re in the right place.
When you arrive for your first session, we’ll start with a brief intake. This is just a conversation to help me understand your needs and ensure your safety. I’ll ask about your medical history, any medications you’re taking, and whether there are any conditions that might affect your session. We’ll talk about why you came in - whether it’s stress, tension, or pain in specific areas. I may also ask if you’ve had any recent injuries or surgeries, if you’re pregnant, and whether you’re comfortable with the use of CBD cream (and it’s absolutely okay if that’s a no). Most importantly, we’ll discuss your goals. Some people want targeted work, like improving shoulder mobility, while others just want to de-stress.
After that, I’ll step out of the room so you can undress to your comfort level. You can leave your underwear on or remove it, either way is completely fine. You’ll be fully covered under a sheet and blanket the entire time, and I will only uncover the area I’m actively working on. Your privacy and comfort are always respected. If you’d like work on your back and shoulders, it’s best to remove your bra. Also, take off any jewelry or watches so nothing interferes with the massage.
Once you’re on the table and settled under the covers, I’ll knock before re-entering. From there, your only job is to relax. I’ll check in about pressure, but don’t hesitate to speak up at any point; whether you want more pressure, less pressure, or anything adjusted. This session is for you.
Depending on your needs, I may work on specific areas (upper body only, for example) or do a full body massage, which can include your hands, feet, face, and scalp. Many people are surprised to find that the face and scalp end up being their favorite part; they’re incredibly relaxing.
Before you know it, the session will be over. Most people say, “Wow, that went fast,” or wish they could stay on the table all day. I’ll step out so you can get dressed, and when you come out, there will be water waiting for you. Chances are, you’ll leave feeling lighter, calmer, and more at ease in your body.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your body is simply give it permission to relax.
