Feeling Self-Conscious About Your Body Before a Massage? Read This First

"I’m self-conscious because I haven’t shaved my legs in months, and I’ve gained a lot of weight - will my massage therapist notice or be bothered by that?"

Are massage therapists bothered by the so-called “flaws” on your body? Unequivocally, no.

Massage therapists are trained professionals who have spent countless hours working with real human bodies in all their variety. Body hair, cellulite, scars, stretch marks, moles, skin texture, body shape, you name it - none of these things are unusual or noteworthy in a treatment room. They are simply part of being human. We don’t see “imperfections,” we see the natural diversity of bodies that carry people through life.

More importantly, our focus isn’t on appearance at all. When you’re on the table, we’re paying attention to how your muscles feel under our hands, where tension is held, how your body responds to pressure, and how we can help you relax and move more comfortably. Our training is rooted in anatomy, physiology, pathology, and therapeutic technique, not esthetics. We are not evaluating how your body looks, we are focused on how it functions and how to support your well-being.

From a practical standpoint, all of these so-called “faults” are irrelevant to the work. Massage therapists are skilled at adapting to different skin types, body compositions, and sensitivities. Nothing about natural human variation interferes with our ability to provide an effective, professional massage.

There is no checklist of physical standards you need to meet. You do not need to alter, fix, or prepare your body to be “acceptable” for massage. The profession is inclusive and built around working with bodies exactly as they are.

So if you’ve been worrying about whether a massage therapist will notice or be bothered by anything about your body, you can put that concern to rest. We’ve seen it all, and none of it matters.

Come as you are and let us do what we’re trained to do - help you feel better in your body.
